If you are thinking of organizing your next golf vacation in Portugal, it is worth taking a long break on the beautiful island of the Atlantic which, rightly, is also called the “floating garden”. The archipelago to which it belongs is made up of 8 islands, Madeira and Porto Santo are the only two inhabited. The island of Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round. In this archipelago where it is always spring, the autumn season is perhaps the best time to visit it: the months of October and November are also much less crowded than the high season and in the city and on the beaches you will not find crowds of tourists of the summer season. Three golf courses to report, two on the larger island and one, splendid scenery, on the island of Porto Santo.

From Lisbon or Porto, it’s about 2 hours of flight. Landing at Funchal airport has always been a lot of fun, especially when there is a nice strong wind !! Aircraft pilots are really super-professionals.

To book the Tee Time, it is best to send an email to the secretary of the Golf Club you have chosen, asking for availability, obviously indicating the day and an indicative time. You can find the e-mail address by opening the Golf Club website from “Open website” and then searching for “contacts” or some Golf Clubs have the form to fill out to get the Tee Time. I think it’s better to send an email to the Secretariat. Opens Google Map at the point of the Golf Club. You can have the necessary information to reach the playing field or to know the distances for example from the Hotel you have chosen for the stay.

WHAT TO EAT IN MADEIRA

The original Madeirense cuisine is essentially poor. Of course, the most traditional recipes are based on the typical food products of the region: fish, bananas, potatoes, sugar cane and its derivatives, fruit (especially tropical). Today, of course, modern connections with the continent have meant that food and chefs capable of cooking them of all origins, cultures and flavors are available on the island. In Funchal you can dine in Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Brazilian, French, Turkish and other restaurants, not to mention of course the Italians!

The typical aperitif is represented by lupins (tremoços) seasoned with garlic and spices, and possibly archides or olives, accompanied by an alcoholic drink. Unlike what is commonly thought, vinho da Madeira is rarely drunk before dinner, rather in favor of a fresh beer, especially if Coral – the local brand. If you are particularly hungry, you can order a famous bolo do caco, simple but tasty: it is a particular type of bread with a round shape, kneaded by hand and baked on a stone plate, stuffed with salted garlic butter and aromatic herbs (mainly parsley). Bolus means in fact round, and the term used alone means “cake”; the persimmon is instead the stone on which this bread is cooked, which tradition has it in volcanic basalt. If roasted to the right point, this simple food will rise to the level of divine delight.

The Madeirense cuisine offers a wide choice of soups, starting with the famous green heat to continue with the exquisite sopa of tomate and cebola com ovo.

Among the meat dishes, it is impossible not to mention the espetadas á madeirense, gigantic skewers of chicken, beef or pork (in modern variants, including fish) skewered on laurel skewers and sprinkled – rigorously by hand – with coarse salt and spices, and then cooked over a high heat. You can enjoy them in Caniçal on the occasion of the feast of the Madonna da Piedade. Dispassionate advice: don’t order one each, because you wouldn’t be able to finish it!

In Madeira, in the kitchen, fish clearly wins over meat: between tuna bifes (steaks) with molho de cebola (onion sauce), picados regionais (fried fish pieces with herbs), bacalhau com nata (very light dish based on cod with cream, eggs and potatoes – delicious!), polvo em escabeche (octopus marinated with onion) and lapas or mexilhões grelhados (patellas or mussels cooked with butter and parsley) you are really spoiled for choice. To be consumed after cholesterol control!

Among the side dishes, one thing that every Madeirense child has devoured since childhood is the milho frito. Simple cubes or polenta sticks, here in Madeira enriched with the inevitable aromatic herbs, fried and served piping hot. If you can, try the batata doce assada (baked) accompanied by brown honey, dark and not sweet at all.

Finally, we come to the desserts: the bolo do mel is found in any supermarket, and is an excellent souvenir to take home. Of not too soft consistency, it is a cocoa-based mixture enriched with dried fruit and raisins. Very tasty, especially if accompanied by a glass of Madeira wine at the end of the meal. During Christmas, the pastry shops churn out special sweets such as the bolo do rei, decorated with candied fruit. Here too, as in the rest of Portugal, the pasteis de nata (small cooked cream cakes) cannot be missing.
