Famous for its wine and the old town center, Bordeaux is a popular destination for tourists interested in both the architectural beauty and the food and wine aspect of the city. In fact, it is not difficult to meet visitors from all over the world walking in the downtown area (since 2007, a World Heritage Site) or along one of the six beautiful wine roads, surrounded by historic vineyards.
Yet it is in the kitchen that Bordeaux shows its best, conquering the palates with refined and appetizing dishes: it should not surprise you, however, that most traditional dishes are based on wine!

Foie gras

Present a little on all French tables, Foie Gras is a must in Bordeaux restaurants. Duck liver in these areas is considered a dish reserved for special occasions, to be shared with friends. The peculiarity of Bordeaux Foie Gras compared to that served in the rest of the country, however, is that it is marinated in brandy to give it an even more decisive taste.

Bordeaux sauce

Among the sauces and condiments used in Bordeaux, the Bordeaux sauce is certainly the best known: this, based on marrow and red wine, is often used to flavor the second courses of meat, especially the rib.

Lamb of Pauillac à la Persillade

Among the most appetizing second courses based on meat, however, we find the Lamb of Pauillac à la Persillade: the lamb chops (from milk, grown in the Pauillac area) are generally cooked on the grill and served with chopped parsley. The dish is quite simple, but the tender and tasty meat of the lamb make it one of the most appreciated in the culinary panorama of Bordeaux.


Cèpe are particular mushrooms of the area , similar to porcini mushrooms, often used as an accompaniment to duck breast. In addition, the mushrooms can be covered with a homemade sauce consisting of ham, onions and aromatic herbs. A mouth-watering delicacy!

Esturgeon à la Libournaise

Even with regards to fish dishes, the choice in Bordeaux is quite wide. One of the most versatile typical fish is sturgeon, proposed in multiple variations. In this case, it can be marinated in white wine for about an hour and a half, flavored with garlic and rosemary, heated on the grill and served to diners with olive oil, salt and pepper.

Lamproie à Bordeaux

Another typical fish of the area is the Lampreda. Little known and with a funny aspect, this river fish, caught in the town of Gironde, is drowned in Bordeaux red wine (alternatively, Bordeaux sauce is also used) and offered together with caviar and oysters, served raw with lemon and bread. Ideal for an aperitif or a refined dinner.

Poires au St. Emillon

Incredible but true, even in some traditional Bordeaux desserts we find the much loved local wine. For the sweet tooth, we advise you not to miss the pears poached in red wine and flavored with orange juice and cinnamon: a real riot of flavors, excellent to end the meal on a high note!


Don’t forget that you are in France, the home of crepes. Soft, thin, stuffed with any type of filling, both sweet and savory, crepes are truly a must for anyone who wants to enjoy something typical, but simple and cheap at the same time … Both young and old would eat them at all hours!


However, cannelé are the representative sweets of the city, prepared with a mixture of flour, eggs, butter, vanilla and rum. The aroma is slightly caramelized and the crunchy exterior contrasts with the softness of the inside. You will find them easily in all bakeries.

Local wine

So far we have met him in the preparation of many recipes, but without a doubt the wine produced from the Bordeaux vineyards is good even if only to drink in company! Among the whites, we suggest you try the Sauvignon Blanc and the Sémillon, while among the famous reds for which the area is renowned, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malberc are unmissable.
